The biggest role of boron in steel is that it can significantly improve the hardenability and replace a large number of alloy elements with only a very small amount of boron. In addition, it can also improve the mechanical properties, cold deformation properties, welding properties and high temperature properties.

The hardenability of steel can be improved significantly by adding 0.07% B. The addition of boron to 18% Cr and 8% Ni stainless steel can make the precipitation hardening and improve the high temperature strength and hardness. Boron in cast iron will affect graphitization, thus increasing the depth of white cast iron to make it hard and wear-resistant. The addition of 0.001% ～ 0.005% boron in malleable iron is beneficial to the formation of nodular graphite and the improvement of its distribution. At present, low aluminum and low carbon ferroboron are the main raw materials of amorphous alloys. According to GB5682-87 standard, ferroboron in China is divided into low carbon and medium carbon 8 brands.

Mainly used in steel and cast iron. For alloy structural steel, spring steel, low alloy high strength steel, heat resistant steel, stainless steel, etc. Boron can improve the toughness and wear resistance of cast iron, and is widely used in the manufacture of automobiles, tractors, machine tools, etc.
